In May of 2009 UBC will be hosting the annual meetings of the Classical Association of Canada and the Association of Ancient Historians.

Navigating the Site

Immediately above this panel you will find two tabs - one for the CAC and one for the AAH.  By clicking on these you will enter the websites for the individual conferences.  Within each you will find the Call for Papers and other information as it becomes available.

Update from the organizer -- May 5th:

The programs for both conferences are now available. Please see the appropriate tabs for those.  There is also a map now available which has the locations of events for the two conferences marked.  I've stuck that on the program pages. See you all in a week! regards, Leanne

Note on registration
We've received some enquiries about dealing with foreign currencies in the registations.  We can't deal with credit cards. So, the best way is to go to your bank and get a money order for the necessary amount in Canadian funds and mail that to us. An alternative that should work for our friends in the US (but apparently many US banks charge a fee - so check with your bank first)  is to use your regular cheque, fill it in for the required amount as determined by the registration form, and write on your cheque "in Canadian funds". The bank will then convert the funds when they process the cheque. I hope this is helpful.

Update from the organizer -- March 3rd:

We had a very good response to the Call for Papers to the CAC. We have just sent out notifications to all those who submitted abstracts for the CAC regarding their abstracts. If you have not heard from me, please get in touch. We are hoping to have the preliminary program for the CAC meeting up here by the end of the month (the program must first be approved by the CAC council). A newer program has just been posted for the AAH - the order of the panels is now set, though the order of papers within has not. Registration for both conferences is now open - you can find the forms under the appropriate tabs.  You can also now reserve your on-campus accommodation. regards, Leanne

Update from the organizer -- January 23:

Our plans are progressing.  We have now added to the website the preliminary program for the AAH. We are starting to review abstracts for the CAC (the deadline passed last Friday).  Registration is open for the AAH, still to come for the CAC.

To give those who are wanting to start planning their trips, I can give you a general sense of how the programs of the two meetings are going to go -- but you can't hold me to all the details yet!

GENERALLY, then, the plan is that the CAC meeting will begin sessions on the morning of May 12 (Tuesday). The meeting will run through Thursday (14th).  We are hoping to schedule at least one history panel in each time slot on Thursday to encourage AAH members to attend. In the late afternoon of Thursday Dr. Edward Champlin (Princeton) will deliver the CAC keynote address which will be the official first event of the AAH meeting.  This will be followed by a reception which will serve as the pre-banquet reception for the CAC and the welcome reception for the AAH. Following the reception CAC members will move to their banquet (if they registered for that) and the AAH members will hit the town on their own (Vancouver will be ready for them!). Friday morning (15th) the CAC members will be recovering from the banquet and the AAH conference will begin its session.  The AAH session will run through Friday and Saturday (16th).  Saturday evening the AAH will have their closing banquet.  Sunday morning will see everyone heading to the airport, sad that it is over, and the organizer will sit with a cool compress on her forehead and a BIG Gin and Tonic in her hand! regards, Leanne
